Description and Opinions
Product Description: The traits have revolutionized the way writing is taught. And nobody knows the traits better than Ruth Culham, who has written over 25 books and conducted countless workshops for teachers of all grades. Now, Ruth turns her expert eye to middle school. The Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for Middle School contains classroom-tested materials developed just for teachers of grades 6-8. Brand-new scoring guides, scored sample papers, Think Abouts, warm-up exercises, focus lessons, and activities for each trait, organized by that trait’s key qualities, make it easy to assess writing and deliver targeted instruction. With CD of reproducible forms. For use with Grades 6–8.
Where has this book been all my teaching life? Thank you, Ruth Culham! Recognizing the dearth of materials for the upper grades, she's actually done something about it. The scored student papers are already proving invaluable, and the cd that's included is full of more papers, and scoring guides (yes!) that are easy for printing or just viewing. I've waited years for a book like this, and all I can say is it has surpassed my expectations. A must-have for all middle-school teachers!
Teaching writing just got easier! Teachers, if you are wondering how to spend your Christmas gift cards, stop now and get this book! I loved Ruth Culham's previous book on the traits, but Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for Middle School surpasses its predecessor in both content and usefulness. Ruth summarizes current research on writing, explains and illustrates each trait, provides numerous student samples and lesson ideas, and lists mentor texts for each trait. But she doesn't stop there! She includes a CD filled with mode-specific strategies, lessons, and student-friendly scoring guides, all ready to use. All of it is written in Ruth's warm, witty style, which makes this book fun to use.
With this one book, Ruth is saving me hours of time--time I previously spent typing sample papers, time creating lessons and warm-ups, time reformatting lessons for my Smart Board. With the CD included, Ruth is giving us the equivalent of three or four books--what a deal! Our district purchased a book for every communication arts teacher; it's really that good.
Take some time to preview this book. You will be glad you did. |
