It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumours to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in which he flubs a few lyrics, claiming that his earpiece isn't working properly, but as he readily acknowledges, "That's what rehearsal is for." It's a tragedy that he didn't get the chance to share this dazzling show with the world, but Ortega allows fans to feel as if it actually happened--at least onscreen. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

I bought this DVD as a present for my son and he said that it was the best 2 and 1/2 hours he'd ever watched. Highly recomended

The Show Lives on
Had purchased the DVD for my son, who is 7 years old and really loves Michael Jackson's music. He has watched it time and again and raves about it. Anything thing that can keep him interested and entertained for that length of time gets my thumbs up!

As many, ive been a Fan/Supporter/Follower of MJ since Jackson 5.
Heard, Read, watched all media coverage, stories, articles etc... BUT and this is a massive 'BUT'
THERE IS NOTHING BETTER, THAT SHOWS THE REAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MICHAEL JACKSON'S CARING NATURE & HIS SPIRIT LIFTING PERSONALITY AS WELL AS RESPECT FOR OTHERS IN THE dvd 'THIS IS IT'. I BOUGHT THE TWO DISC VERSION AND HAVE NO REGRETS, I COULD WATCH IT OVER & OVER.
The main video covers interesting rehearsals, stage setup, costume design, the technology behind effects and much more. If MJ was still here the real concert would have been the greatest ever.
"The Two disc version, does "exactly what it says on the Box" The dvd concentrates on his final performance rehersals and disc Two extras include, up-close documentary with the dancers, artists & Musicians. Almost like a Credit for there work. There was a small part of me that really wanted much more from the Two disc, collectors Ed. BUT when thoughout with more understanding, it is Just The Right Content for the DVD. I had concert Tickets for the 'This Is It' Show and this dvd delivers what we would have wanted to see & not over crammed with old concert clips etc. BUT, AS I MASSIVE MJ FAN, WHAT ALL MJ FANS WOULD EXPECT FROM A TWO DISC Ed IN FUTURE COMPILATIONS IS A COMPLETE SUMMARY OF HIS LIFE FROM MOTOWN TO PREVIOUS CONCERT FOOTAGE, MAY BE SOME VIDEOS SONGS FROM "MOONWALKER" ETC AND FINISHING OFF WITH STUNNING 'THIS IS IT' FOOTAGE.
OVERALL THE TWO DISC 'THIS IS IT' DVD, ITS GREAT , SHOW MJ IN FIRST PERSON AND DIRECT, YOU CAN LITTERALLY SEE WHY HE WAS THE KING OF POP & WHY HE STILL WILL BE.
Defy you to stay in your seat - glad I didn't see it at the Cinema!
This was my 50th birthday present from my Sister. I grew up with the Music of MJ and J5. In the 80's and 90's I was around to see MJ graduate from a super talented little guy to a musical genius. When "Dangerous" came out for me he took an amazing new musical direction.
Some reviewers say this film defies genre - for me, it is a documentary and a very beautiful one. Michael is rehearsing for his comeback, but most of the time he sings at top notch as far as I can see. There is one moment where Michael sings unaccompanied and the sweetness of his voice is unsurpassable. To see him working creatively with his team is an eye-opener - he is actually a very experienced and able orchestrator and musician, and what comes over is he really knows his stuff as he works with Kenny Ortega and musically directs an A team. The rework of "Thriller" is totally amazing and contemporary with flying spirits, zombies in costumes of the french revolution. There is also an important point that is made as Michael makes a mini-eco film which would be shown and choreographed in the concert. At the end he urges all his performers that the most important point of the concert is to get this point across.
In the dance auditions, they choose on the basis that Michael "breathes" dance and they are looking for that quality - they get it. The dance team is world-class but don't approach Michael's ability which as you watch you realise is deep within his DNA. The respect he commands from all he works with shines out through the film and after the first five minutes you're aware you are watching something special. There is a beautiful duet he sings with an afro-american lady which is soul-stirring.
All I did throughout the whole movie was constantly catch my breath. I knew MJ was good but I didn't know he was THIS GOOD! And I just had to get up and DANCE!!!
There are some seriously good musical reworkings here with some great rock guitar frills and riffs.
I am going to buy the CDs. So sad we lost you Michael, this was going to be the crowning glory of your career. Michael constantly says to people "God Bless you" all along the way. God Bless You too MJ. I treasure this DVD. Highly recommended, lifts the spirit.
